旅先での洗濯

You can wash your clothes while traveling! A laundry expert and mother of four teaches you how to easily wash your clothes while traveling

When you go on a long-term trip or a family trip, you tend to carry a lot of luggage, especially the clothes and underwear you change every day.
I'm worried about carrying around dirty underwear that I used on a trip, and I get really tired of having to wash piles of laundry after I get back from a trip.
This problem can be solved if you can do your laundry at your accommodation, but hotel laundry services can be expensive even if the results are good, so if possible, you'll want to do your own laundry.
In this article, laundry expert Rie Hirashima will show you how to easily and efficiently wash your own clothes at a hotel while traveling.
If you know this, you can travel light because you can minimize the amount of bulky clothing you need.

The key to choosing clothes for your trip is to choose clothes that are washable!

Packing while thinking about what to wash and what not to wash while traveling is a very important task to reduce the amount of luggage you carry.
Even if you wear clothes every day, if you can wash them, you don't need to carry them for several days.
Clothes that are suitable for hand-washing at your destination include underwear, socks, and thin T-shirts .
Also, if you carefully select materials that dry quickly, such as polyester or nylon , they will dry more quickly.

Clothes such as denim, hooded tops, thick hoodies, and sweaters that are difficult to dry due to their thick fabrics are not suitable for hand washing while traveling.
If you really want to wash clothes that are not suitable for hand washing while traveling, use a coin laundry or the laundry service at your accommodation.

Easy ways to wash your hands while traveling

We will introduce what you need to wash your hands at your place of stay (hotel/accommodation) and some points to keep in mind when washing your hands.
It's easy to wash and dry in a short amount of time if you know how to do it correctly.

What you need for hand washing

  • Small laundry detergent
  • Ziploc bags, plastic bags, etc.
  • laundry rope
  • pinch hanger

Small laundry detergent

Some people may use bar soap or shampoo from a hotel as a substitute for laundry detergent, but they don't wash well, so if you decide to do laundry during your trip, be sure to prepare laundry detergent.
We also recommend bringing the detergent you usually use in a different container.
Since there is a risk of liquid detergent leaking, we recommend powdered detergent, which comes in single-use portions .
They are sold in packs for travel and for single use.
The Rinenna #1 trial set, which removes dirt just by soaking it, is convenient to carry as it comes in small portions!

Ziploc bags, plastic bags, etc.

The sinks in overseas hotels may not have stoppers, so bring a ziplock bag or plastic bag with you.
Nowadays, when you go shopping both domestically and internationally, you may not be given a bag or you have to pay for it, so it's a good idea to prepare a bag for washing in advance.

laundry rope

Hotel bathrooms often have laundry ropes, but if you want to dry your clothes in your room to prevent drying, use a laundry rope.
It is also sold for 100 yen.

pinch hanger

Hotels have hangers provided, but if you can't remove the hangers or you can use them to dry small clothes such as socks, it's a good idea to have a pinch hanger as it's compact.
There are also foldable pinch hangers on sale, so it's convenient to have one.

How to wash clothes by hand

make cleaning solution

Fill a sink or bag with hot water of about 40℃, add enough detergent for one load of laundry, and mix well to dissolve.

put the laundry in

Place the laundry in the washing solution and gently press and massage the clothes.

Change the water and rinse

After washing, change the lukewarm water (or cold water) and gently press the clothes to rinse.
Rinse several times until the water runs clear.
If you use fabric softener, use it at the end of the rinse cycle and finish with a light rinse.

Dehydrate using a bath towel

Gently squeeze it to drain the water, then place the garment on top of a bath towel and roll it up from the end to dehydrate it.
If you have access to multiple bath towels, you can place them on top of each other and sandwich them together like a sandwich to dehydrate the bath towels.
Avoid twisting and wringing your clothes when dehydrating them (like wringing them out like a rag), as this will damage the fabric and cause it to lose its shape.
By thoroughly dehydrating yourself with a bath towel, the time it takes for your clothes to dry will change!

Dry using a laundry rope

It is recommended to dry laundry in a room such as a bedroom rather than in a humid bathroom.
You can also prevent dryness by hanging it indoors.

If you dry your clothes on the curtain rail of your chair, they won't dry well and will cause a dry smell in your room, so use a laundry rope to dry them.
When the air conditioner is on, it will be easier to dry if you hang it out in the air.
If you use Rinenna #1 detergent, there is no need to massage! Just put your laundry in the cleaning solution and let it soak to remove dirt.
Simply make a cleaning solution in a washbasin, bucket, or plastic bag at your place of stay, and soak your clothes thoroughly to thoroughly remove odors and dirt.
